I had a recurring problem with an In-grown nail and I decided it to be taken out - the whole toe nail. On Wednesday I went to St. Luke's Hospital and had my toe checked. The Surgeon told me what she normally does is she would be cutting off the affected area - in this case both sides of the toe (which has an ingrown) and then leave the middle part be. I requested for the whole nail to be remoced so that it would grow even. Then I was scheduled to have the operation (minor surgery) on Friday at 12noon.
I was early there and when I got to the HMO office, I forgot the Pink Admission Slip which I need to get into the OR. So I had to wait and get another one, then get a Letter Of Authorization that I can be operated on. So I was able to be on the table by 1pm. What I did was, so I was treated nicely, I put on my British accent i.e. to get good service. Everyone was nice to me (Laughing devilishly). I had to don a hospital gown, booties, and cap, mind you they did not allow me to still wear my boxers underneath the gown - so I was going commando the entire time. When everything was set, the surgeon came and I profusely apologized to her for being tardy, she gave me a lecture and went to get scrubbed. There were 6 people there. 2 Surgeons (my doctor and her residency doctor), 2 scrub nurses, and 2 interns.
This is how the surgery went -
1) They cleaned my left foot with saline solution and painted it with Betadine.
2) They did a Digital Block (administered anesthesia on the sides of my big toe) The Surgeon asked me if I felt anything and I said no, when she went to the left side of the toe she asked me if it hurt I said a bit. Little did I know that she was peeling off the nail with forceps then.
3) They cleaned the surrounding area then and bandaged it
Total time = 20mins.
They gave me some prescription drugs to stave off infection amongst other things. I have to keep the wound dry so it would heal nicely.
When I was cleared to leave the OR. I then proceeded to the cashier and bill out (Thank God for the company HMO: Maxicare and Philhealth) so I did not have to dish out any money for the entire operation which was valued at P2,715
- Funny thing is that "Mitch" the girl in the counter saw LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring and chatted me about that. I told her it was the third time I had read it and that I have no more books to read. She even said that she had read the books by M. Night Shyamala. I think she was confused about the film and the book. I just chatted politely at her so she would not lose face.
